During the industrial revolution, much more cotton was made which made the price drop and put cotton in the reach of mass markets. Cotton was also commodified at a smaller scale in countries like Egypt, Mexico, and Brazil.

Todaywealthy countries continue to buy cotton and cotton sales remail important for some former colonies. But now they have to compete with cotton grown in the U.S., NE China, and Central Asia. The government more directly affects agriculture by providing tax regulations and subsidies for those who use favored practices.
